We are very happy to welcome new faces to CHCC. We welcome Sherry Mann, Tonya Monroe, and Tyi Franklin. These new faces are here to fill the nursing spaces left by Maria Mekeel and Caren Moody, two of our beloved nurses, who have both moved on to new positions. Our front desk has some new faces as well! Welcome to Erin McGovern, Liz Webb and Eleanor Fahrbach. Goodbye to Jordan Caswell from the front desk, who has moved out of the area.
So Your Child Has a Tick Bite. What Next?
Ticks can be encountered in central North Carolina in spring, summer, fall, and even winter. And few events distress parents more than finding a tick firmly embedded on their child.
But don’t panic. Most ticks can be easily removed at home, and most bites don’t lead to serious disease.
To remove a tick, it is best to use a pair of fine tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull it straight out with a steady, non-twisting pull. If no tweezers are available, use your fingers, trying to avoid squeezing the tick as much as possible.
Flush the tick down the toilet or wrap it in tape and discard. Wash your hands well. Wash the tick bite site, apply topical antibiotic, and cover briefly with a band aid. Tick bite sites can look like mosquito bites and can itch for several days.
Ticks can cause some very serious diseases. The scariest in our area is Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, transmitted by Dog Ticks and Lone Star Ticks. Our part of North Carolina is one of the areas of highest prevalence of this disease. Other important diseases are Erlichiosis, tick paralysis, tularemia, babesiosis, and Lyme disease. If, up to 3 weeks after being bitten by a tick, you or your child develop fever, body aches, headache, nausea and vomiting, and or rashes, definitely bring your child to see us. If severe symptoms develop even in the absence of a known tick bite, definitely bring him in. Many ticks go unnoticed.
